Experts have concluded that many modern Indo-European languages, including English, originated in Turkey approximately 9,000 years ago. It was previously thought that this group of languages developed 5,000 years ago in the south-west of Russia.
The researchers, based in New Zealand, were studying both the Turkish language and the Indo-European group, creating ‘family trees’ of languages to discover where they were first used. Linguistic experts are continoulsy studying the origin and spread of various languages in an attempt to fully understand language history and development.
The Indo European language group is one of the largest linguistic families and is inclusive of over 400 languages from 60 various countries.
